Harbour Hounds & The Boat Show: a shared mission to protect the environment

Harbour Hounds is very excited to be participating in the Southampton International Boat Show this year, not just because it is the premier event for the world of boating, but because we also have a shared ethos - that of protecting the environment.

In the run-up to this world-class event, myself and Nelly, Harbour Hounds’ mascot, joined a clean-up of Southampton’s Weston Shore organised by British Marine, the marine industry’s trade association and organisers of the Southampton International Boat Show. Along with 40 other volunteers, we went about protecting this important coastal habitat and its wildlife by collecting over 17 bags of rubbish.

Boat Show Environmental Pledge

The clean-up was part of British Marine’s Boat Show Environmental Pledge, which aims to minimise the environmental impact of the event. This year’s Boat Show will see an emphasis on reducing single use plastic onsite, with only cans of soft drinks and water on sale and the use of compostable cups at onsite catering outlets, as well as water refill points throughout the Show. The organisers are also encouraging all the exhibitors to take part and think about how they can commit to the environmental pledge.

At Harbour Hounds, we didn’t have to think too hard about it, as this is something we committed to right from the start. We have consciously developed our own line of products without the use of plastic, wherever and whenever possible. The belly straps on the Harbour Hounds Dog Beach Robes are metal poppers instead of plastic clips. On the Harbour Hounds EM Tick-Off Dog Necklaces we have again used metal toggles instead of plastic ones. The Harbour Hounds Beach Bag/Mat also features metal poppers. We are also committed to working with our treat suppliers to find alternative packaging to single-use plastic.

Harbour Hounds & The Boat Show

The shared environmental ethos of the Southampton International Boat Show and Harbour Hounds is one of the key reasons that I was keen for Harbour Hounds to showcase a pop-up shop there and I’m really delighted to be part of an event that is making a real difference. You can find us at B043 in the Holiday Inn area, so do come along and say hello - and bring your four-legged friend to meet us too, as dogs are allowed in this year!
